Last week we talked about Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Simply put this means your thoughts affect your emotions which causes behavior. Over the past 17 years of doing therapy I have discovered its not quite that simple. Emotions affect our bodies too. In my practice. I have begun incorporating body work. What does this mean for us as we journal? We journal about our body. We start by doing a body scan. Identify a body part that cries for attention with pain. Focus on that body part. Snuggle in. Set the intention to writing about the paun you feel. Ground like a tree. Mindfully scan your body again focusing on that body part. Now speak to it. "I hear your pain I am hear to listen ........" Now write what images, feelings and memeries come to mind. No analyzing. Write it all down. Leave it for tomorrow. We talked about feelings and we talked about cognitive distortions, now what? Now we put them into our model of A-B-C-D. A is for an event. B is for the cogbitive distortion. C is for the feeling you have about A, which is influencing C. D is what you state to yourself to dispute B. An example is someone got a B on a test at work. They run to the bathroom to cry. They are thinking to themselves that they should have had a perfect score. They are sad, mad and ashamed of themselves. In this example A is getting a B on the test. B is the expectation of getting an area. C is the crying, sadness and shame with getting a B. D is saying to yourself a B is a good grade. Its okay I didnt get an A. This is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Lets write using some examples of your cognitive distortions we talked about earlier. Snuggle in. Set your intention to working through the model on an event in your life. Ground like a tree. Mindfully scan your body. Our cognitive distortion for today is shoulding. What does it mean to should ourselves? When we say "I should be or they should be?" We are trying to make the world be the way we believe it should be. It becomes a cognitive distortion when we become really upset about why someone or something isnt happening. Have you tried to make the world operate the way you want it too? It's crazy making when you try. So what do you do? You change the way you think because the world isn't going to change for you.
